In many ways, automobiles and fine timepieces go hand in hand. Both offer enthusiasts intricate design, precision engineering, and a deeply personal connection between man and machine, and there has been no shortage of inspiration shared between the two over the years. While automotive-inspired timepieces are common, however, most fall into the same category. London-based Alludens changes the paradigm with its new Marque Racing watch, taking classic motorsports elements into a classical dress design that avoids leaning on faux heritage or patina.
The stainless steel case of the Alludens Marque Racing is elegantly proportioned at 39.5mm in diameter, wide enough to maintain a sporting ethos while remaining compact and timeless on the wrist. The overall form is iconic and sporty, with broad brushed lugs, a smooth polished bezel, and straight polished case sides, but it’s the view from its side that truly sets the Marque Racing apart. The entire package measures in at only 9.85mm-thick, offering a dressy, slim profile and earning the watch the distinction of being the thinnest timepiece ever produced with its movement. Over nine months of engineering and four rounds of tooling go into each deceptively simple case. This slender design is topped with a vintage inspired box sapphire crystal, featuring anti-reflective coating for maximum legibility at any angle.
Like the case, the dial of the Alludens Marque Racing combines bold sporting elements with dressy elegance, but it’s here that the racing roots of the watch show themselves clearest. The outer seconds track of the dial uses a handsomely masculine checkered flag pattern evoking the great racing watches of the ‘60s and ‘70s, accented further by bold red printed markers at each hour for added sporting flair. Beyond being visually exciting, the printed elements of this track are expertly crafted, with a multi-layer printing process that allows each element to stand out from the dial surface for dynamic light play. Inside this track, the dial elements are elemental in their simplicity, with applied baton indices and sharply faceted pointed baton hands all featuring a generous helping of Super-LumiNova BWG9 lume.
At the heart of the Alludens Marque Racing lies the reliable Miyota Caliber 9039 automatic movement. In addition to a 42-hour power reserve, this movement provides a smooth 28,800 bph sweep and -10/+30 seconds per day in accuracy.
Alludens solidifies the racing spirit of the Marque Racing with its strap, a timelessly masculine black leather rally style strap with ventilation holes for comfort and classic motorsports style. Each strap is handmade, resulting in a level of artisanship and finish worthy of such a meticulously made timepiece.
With the Marque Racing, Alludens has managed to capture the spirit of auto racing and translate it into a timeless package that is truly versatile enough to be worn every day in nearly any situation. Even more impressively, the brand has managed to create a package that punches well above its price range, offering design and finishing far beyond its peers. The Alludens Marque Racing is available for pre-order now at an MSRP of $335. For more information, please visit the brand’s website.
