For decades, Bulova has earned a coveted place in the watch industry as an innovator in movement technology from its development of the revolutionary Accutron tuning fork movement in 1960 to the incredible accuracy of the Precisionist line. Through it all, however, the brand has maintained a dedication to the art of the classical automatic watch. Recently, Bulova has renewed its commitment to automatic timepieces with a collection of eight new models in three model lines proudly featuring these movements. These three lines, the Regatta Automatic Slim, the Wilton Automatic Power Reserve, and the Maquina, run the gamut from revivals of classic Bulova designs to truly avant-garde styles.

The first of these, the Regatta Automatic Slim, breathes new life into a legendary Bulova collection dating back to 1953. The distinctive midcentury case design, with its unmistakable attached lugs and circular center profile, is reinterpreted in a modern 40 millimeter size while remaining elegantly slim at 8.8 millimeters thick. The build quality of this classic design is decidedly contemporary, with brilliant polishing, a scratch resistant sapphire crystal, and a display caseback for viewing the Miyota 9015 automatic movement within.

The dial of the Regatta Automatic Slim, available in both black and silver, is elegantly styled. It features a classic mix of sunburst finished and deeply ridged surfaces for dynamic light play, especially coupled with the applied faceted indices. The centerpiece of the dial, however, is undoubtedly the wide open heart aperture, offering the wearer an inside look at the working powerplant of the watch. Bulova offers the Regatta Automatic Slim on a timeless alligator pattern black leather strap or a multi-link stainless steel bracelet with deployant clasp.

The most technically impressive of Bulova’s automatic model lines is undoubtedly the Wilton Automatic Power Reserve. Powered by the premium Miyota Cal. 9110 automatic movement, the Wilton Automatic Power Reserve offers a wide display of information at a glance including a 24 hour indicator, day, date, and an indication of the current state of the movement’s 40 hour power reserve. This beating heart offers a smooth 28,800 bph beat rate and an accuracy of -10 to +30 seconds per day. Bulova leaves the Cal. 9110 clearly visible behind a sapphire display caseback.

The 43 millimeter case of the Wilton Automatic Power Reserve is masculine and sporty, with broad tapering lugs and a narrow bezel accented by a distinctive stepped case side running the length of the watch. With six hands displaying a wide variety of information, the dial remains classically refined with a radial guilloche pattern in blue, silver or medium gray. While the blue and silver dials are further highlighted with silver-tone alpha hands and applied Roman numerals, the gray dial injects luxurious warmth with contrasting rose gold tone hands and indices. The power reserve indicator that gives the watch its name sits proudly at 12 o’clock, providing a visual centerpiece for the top of the dial and acting as a counterweight to the subdials at 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock, as well as the date window at 3 o’clock.

Bulova showcases its modernist design credentials with the Maquina collection. The bold, oversized 46 millimeter case, rendered in stainless steel, gold tone, or stealthy PVD black, offers an aggressive geometric style. Its integrated lugs flow directly into a tapering black leather strap with matching contrast stitching for a unified, streamlined look.

The Maquina’s dial plays with the notion of the “skeleton dial”, cutting away the center of the dial surface in the shape of a stylized skull. This offers a full view of the beating Miyota 8N26 automatic movement within. The rest of the dial is strong and futuristic, with a blend of applied wedge indices, multiple dial surfaces and matching skeleton hands.

While the dial of the Maquina offers a clear view into the heart of the 8N26 movement, the display caseback gives wearers a further glimpse into the workings of this automatic powerhouse. The movement itself is well equipped with a 42 hour power reserve and -20 to +40 second daily accuracy.

Together, these three model lines showcase the diversity and quality of Bulova’s automatic timepiece lineup, along with the brand’s continuing commitment to the craft of mechanical watchmaking. All three of these model lines are currently available for purchase, with the Regatta Automatic Slim featuring a suggested retail price of $595 on leather and $695 with a stainless steel bracelet. The suggested retail price of the Wilton Automatic Power Reserve is $895, while the MSRP for the Maquina line stands at $595. For more information on these models, please visit Bulova’s website.
