Breitling keeps mining its archives with unavoidably awesome results. Last year’s 1958 reissue was, in my opinion, the best thing Breitling has ever done. I mean it. Ever. Well, chalk me up as consternated, because the Georges Kern carnival has just served up another doozy. The Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition is truly something special. But it’s not without its controversies…
The Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition’s life began 67 years ago with the launch of a pilot’s watch known as the “co-pilot.” Almost seven decades later, this oft-forgotten gem has been reborn. Seein..

Oris Big Crown ProPilot Big Date Watch Hands-On

If you haven’t looked at Oris Big Crown ProPilot watches in a while, it might be time to give the modern aviator timepiece collection a fresh glance. The very sporty Big Crown ProPilot now has dressier options which offer a brand new look and fashionable versatility to the otherwise straight-forward tool watch collection. Case in point is the Big Crown ProPilot Big Date, which I check out here as the reference 01 751 7761 4063-07 8 20 08P.
Oris uses the term “Big” in the name of the watch twice – a misnomer. The “Big Crown” name comes from the fact that some of the more classic-looking Oris Big Crown pilot watches literally have a rather large crown. They also try to suggest that the date window is large, but in fact a “big date” is suggestive of a complication that does not exist on this watch. The case is an excellent – not big – size, being 41mm wide and about 13mm thick given the domed sapphire crystal. With that said the Big Crown ProPilot Big Date wears slim on the wrist – a wel..

A Blue Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique Watch Hits The Shelves

HomeWatch ReleasesA Blue Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique Watch Hits The Shelves Watch ReleasesBreguetA Blue Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique Watch Hits The Shelves And it's a stunner… by Rob NuddsFebruary 18, 2020 MIN READA Blue Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique Watch Hits The ShelvesThe Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 is not new. Nor, as you may have noticed if you live in a clement part of the world, is the color blue. However, these two staples of daily luxury life have never been brought together. That is until now…
There are few brands in the industry that have the name-power of Breguet. It isn’t just that the modern iteration of the brand is renowned for high-quality timepieces often flaunting a timeless elegance others struggle to match, but it is also the weight of history attached to the founder’s name. Abraham-Louis Breguet was not just a watchmaker. He was arguably the watchmaker. In his..

Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 Grand Feu Blue Enamel Dial Watch

Just announced, the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 is a blue enamel dial version of Breguet’s very thin, very subtle, and very expensive caliber 581. Last year we saw the Squelette 5395, which gives a look through the skeletonized movement, but this 5367 echoes the three-hand Classique 5177 with a blue enamel dial. While an impressive enamel finish really does need to be seen in person to appreciate, I have seen several enamel-dial Breguet pieces and they really are among the best out there. I find that the choice of this deep blue goes a long way in making the highly traditional Breguet aesthetic just a little more contemporary.

While Bulgari has taken the mantle of thinnest tourbiillon, the Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 did hold the title when it was released back in 2013. The original model was done in a guilloché dial and saw its first enamel dial back in 2017, which was done in white.
The tone of blue that Breguet aims to achieve on this enamel dial is i..

A Look Inside Glashütte Original’s SeaQ Dive Watch Dial Production

I have visited several dozens of watch manufactures — a term that is commonly accepted as referring to a watch movement manufacture. And yet, it is the dial and hand manufactures that I find most important and most interesting, followed by the case-makers and movement production facilities. It is distinctly rare for a luxury watchmaker to share in-depth details on the production of dials, and so, combined with my first-hand experience of the Glashütte Original dial manufacture in Pforzheim, I was excited to dig into the 13-pages of informational material that the Saxon brand shared about the making of its SeaQ dive watch dials.

Glashütte Original has a fully integrated movement manufacture in the town of — you guessed it — Glashütte. As Germanly perfect and impressive as that was, with its in-house tool-making, individually heat-blued screws, and so on, its very own dial manufacture in the “Golden City” of Pforzheim was the one that really set my pants on fire. Set firmly in this his..
