Hands-On: Moritz Grossmann Power Reserve Watch In Black Steel

My first proper hands-on experience with the small, hugely dedicated German manufacture Moritz Grossmann happened to come with the Moritz Grossmann Power Reserve in black steel, an objectively impressive luxury watch with some subjectively annoying nuances – there was a lot to take in.
From afar, i.e., through photos and passing hands-on moments at trade shows, I have long admired Moritz Grossmann’s dedication to watchmaking. As I unpacked the Power Reserve in black steel, I found a small but comprehensive booklet that comes with every watch, explaining the history and, more importantly, the values and current crafts and craftspeople of the company. After eight years in this business, I think I can distinguish words written by someone in a marketing office in perfect isolation from where watchmaking actually happens from words written by a small team that actively carries the same flag. The latter displays unity in effort and values. My impression, although I am yet to visit, is of th..

Hands-On: Tudor Black Bay Bronze Bucherer Blue M79250BB-0001

It was back in 2016 that Swiss Tudor first released the Black Bay Bronze watch (aBlogtoWatch hands-on here). This was not only the first bronze-cased watch from Tudor but also a larger-sized Black Bay model (which now comes in a series of sizes) at 43mm-wide. Tudor has since released a small assortment of Black Bay Bronze watches, mainly for special retailers. That includes the pictured Tudor Black Bay Bronze Bucherer Blue reference M79250BB-0001 that you see here.
The watch is part of the larger “Bucherer Blue” family of watches, produced by various important luxury brands to be sold exclusively through the Bucherer authorized watch dealers. There are a number of “Bucherer Blue” models that adopt a royal blue color palette to a number of popular high-end timepiece collections. Bucherer stores are mainly in Europe, but the Lucerne-based company (which also owns the watch brand Carl F. Bucherer) has since branched out. A few years ago, Bucherer acquired the formerly American Tourneau f..

Bulgari Octa Roma Carillon Tourbillon In Black DLC Titanium

Just released as part of LVMH Watch Week 2021 is the Bulgari Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon, the latest haute horlogerie halo piece demonstrating the brand playing at the absolute top levels of watchmaking. And this one isn’t nearly as complicated as its 1,200+ component Grande Sonnerie pieces, either. The Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon does take a decidedly contemporary design turn with not just a black DLC-coated titanium case but a new movement with skeletonized bridges finished in black titanium, as well.
Two things I want to mention before continuing. First, once there’s a video of the chime in action, I’ll embed it here. Second, I am fairly certain these photos by Bulgari were edited in a way that removes some color, so just keep that in mind.

Unlike minute repeaters with two gongs, the Octa Roma Carillon Tourbillon uses three, which allows for a third higher note. If you’ll recall, the Bulgari Daniel Roth Carrillon Tourbillon Minute-Repeater had a similar se..

Interview With James Thompson, AKA Black Badger

HomeInterviewsInterview With James Thompson, AKA Black BadgerInterviewsInterview With James Thompson, AKA Black Badger From watches to coffee to cars and back again… by Rob Nudds June 18, 2020 MIN READInterview With James Thompson, AKA Black BadgerThe watch industry, like its products, has a lot of moving parts. Millions of people around the world play their part in bringing our interest to life. But it is true that some people play a much more visible role in the task than others. Those characters that come to define eras of watchmaking should be championed. They should be listened to, learned from, and respected. Even if they did name themselves after a badger…
If you’ve never met James Thompson, you should probably stick it on your to-do list. I don’t mean in a creepy, stalker kind of way. I mean in a nice, dignified, organic kind of way (like “accidentally running into him” at an event). Please, please, please, do not board a plane for Stockholm and spend weeks traipsing around t..

Roger Dubuis Launches Full Black Version Of The Excalibur Huracán

Roger Dubuis is one of the few brands that have a very successful partnership with a leading car brand. Perhaps it is because it shares the same outlook on product development with Lamborghini, or that they have a similar style. A fact is that the machines from Sant'Agata Bolognese have served as an inspiration for Roger Dubuit to create equally impressive watches. One of these watches is based on the Huracán, Lamborghini's V10 powered sports car which replaced the Gallardo in 2014. READ MORE

D. Candaux DC6 Black Phantom Carbon Watch

Independent watchmaker David Candaux (D. Candaux) has now released a new version of its innovative and handcrafted DC6 watch in a black carbon case. The piece is known as the D. Candaux DC6 Black Phantom Carbon, and it is being released as an extension of last year’s D. Candaux DC6 (DC 6) Solstice Titanium watch (aBlogtoWatch hands-on here). Read that article to learn more about Mr. Candaux and the overall design, development, and functionality of the DC6 timepiece collection.
What is primarily different about the Black Phantom Carbon than the Solstice Titanium is the case material — which, for this DC6, is in a form of precision-milled carbon with an organic grain texture. The case appears to be very nicely cut and, if the carbon textures appear in real life as they do in the D. Candaux press images, then the DC 6 Black Phantom Carbon is going to be a real looker. D. Candaux also boasts that it was able to squeeze out 50m of water resistance from the case — an impressive feat given t..

Hands-On: Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR Blue/Black Bezel Watch

One of the most popular Rolex Oyster Professional sport watches from the last few years is the reference 116710BLNR GMT-Master II “Batman” — referred to as such because of its distinctive blue and black “Cerachrom” ceramic bezel. This was the first steel Rolex watch to include a two-tone ceramic bezel, which has since been supplemented with a blue and red “Pepsi” Cerachrom bezel in 2019 as Rolex updated the overall GMT-Master II collection with various new features, including a new movement. While the Rolex reference 126710BLRO (red and blue bezel) GMT-Master II stole much of the attention (aBlogtoWatch hands-on here) over the last year, it is also joined by this 126710BLNR (blue and black bezel) that is, in essence, an upgraded Rolex Batman.
The new 126710 generation Rolex GMT-Master II has upgrades over the previous generation 116710 in a few ways. One feature that is not, per se, an upgrade but merely a cosmetic difference is the choice of matching steel bracelet. For many, this wi..
