You Asked Us: When Were Watches First Invented

HomeYou Asked UsYou Asked Us: When Were Watches First Invented You Asked UsYou Asked Us: When Were Watches First Invented Disputed definitions and mysterious history abound… by Rob Nudds May 22, 2020 MIN READYou Asked Us: When Were Watches First InventedAs is becoming something of a trope, I’d like to start this edition of You Asked Us with another question entirely. Before we can answer “When were watches first invented”, we must first address the somewhat broader question of “What is a watch?”
I’m sure you have a pretty good image in your head. I did too. And then I really started to think about it. How does one really draw a line between watches and clocks? On the surface there are a few simple suggestions that seem to hold weight, but ultimately fall down thanks to exceptional outliers spoiling the party for everyone else.

A clean definitionMany sources will define a watch as a portable timepiece. This definition is insufficient, simply because portable clocks also patently exis..

For some time, a determined team in Seiko’s Suwa facility in central Japan had been working on the creation of a watch that would be as precise, durable, comfortable, and beautiful as humanly possible. The re-creation of that legendary timepiece has just launched. And it is a beauty.
The result of their efforts? A watch with a 14k gold filled case and a slim movement, whose precision met the highest international standard of the time. The level of their achievement was such that it was decided to call the watch Grand Seiko. Now, in this special year, ..

Speedy Tuesday — The first Omega Speedmaster Professional Snoopy Award

HomeSpeedy TuesdaySpeedy Tuesday — The first Omega Speedmaster Professional Snoopy Award Speedy TuesdayOmegaSpeedy Tuesday — The first Omega Speedmaster Professional Snoopy Award 50 years ago, the Speedmaster saved the Apollo 13 crew by Robert-Jan BroerFebruary 25, 2020 MIN READSpeedy Tuesday — The first Omega Speedmaster Professional Snoopy AwardThis year marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. It is perhaps the most talked-about mission besides the Apollo 11 Moon landing. The mission that had a rough start, to begin with, and almost ended with a fatal accident in space.
The Speedmaster didn’t fix the issue onboard the Apollo 13 service module at approximately 200,000 miles distance from Earth, but it did play an important role in the safe return of astronauts Haise, Swigert, and Lovell. You can read all about it in the article explaining why there’s a Snoopy on the dial that I wrote a few years back.
Omega was awarded NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award in October 1970 for the ro..

Chanel Debuts The World’s First Fully Two-Tone Ceramic Watch With The J12 Paradoxe

Chanel has long been a pioneer in the use of ceramics in watchmaking, helping to spark the ceramic watch trend itself with the release of the original J12 in 2000. Over the past two decades, as ceramics have increasingly become a go-to material for luxury timepieces, the atelier has continued to innovate in the field, and for 2020 it has made another giant leap with the now iconic J12 platform. The Chanel J12 Paradoxe, announced this week by the brand, is the first ever watch to feature a fully ceramic case rendered in two separate colors — in this case, starkly brilliant black and white. There’s no denying this is a major technical achievement, especially at a time when other high profile brands are still working on developing two tone ceramic bezels, let alone cases, but there’s more to the J12 Paradoxe than just the colors.

Naturally, the 38mm ceramic case is the Chanel J12 Paradoxe’s greatest novelty. The uneven black and white split, meant to hide undetected beneath a cuff or sl..

Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM 1661 First Look

Rumor had it that 2020 was going to be the year of the Luminor for Panerai, and this new Luminor Marina Carbotech ref. PAM1661 could be an early indicator confirming that notion. Most of what we saw from Panerai in 2019 seemed to center around the re-shuffling of the brand’s portfolio, particularly with a focus on tidying up existing lines while introducing new Due dress and Submersible tool/sport models. It seems only natural that Panerai turn to its signature breadwinner for the same treatment — and leading things off is a super-technical twist on an otherwise classic.

You wouldn’t be mistaken for wondering if there weren’t already a Luminor Marina rendered in ultralight Carbotech — in fact, there is: It’s PAM661, which is also a black 44mm Luminor case fitted with the same P.9010 movement. But what makes this old reference interesting isn’t its “dirty dial” (a nickname given to Panerai dials that use beige Super-LumiNova), but its somewhat rare dial configuration, which mixes appl..

Vault V2+ Red CC Is World’s First Carbon-Ceramic Watch

HomeNewsVault V2+ Red CC Is World’s First Carbon-Ceramic Watch NewsVaultVault V2+ Red CC Is World’s First Carbon-Ceramic Watch A new material and a striking aesthetic gets the year of the Rat off to a flying start by Sky SitJanuary 28, 2020 MIN READVault V2+ Red CC Is World’s First Carbon-Ceramic WatchRed is one of the most celebratory features for the Chinese New Year. As we step into a new Lunar year of the Rat, it’s time for a bold creation for good luck and prosperity! The Vault V2+ Red CC is happy to oblige.
The new Vault V2+ Red CC is a piece of mechanical art. It is a unique piece introduced by Vault, as a precursor to their upcoming new range V2. The V2+ showcases the brand’s bespoke capabilities, “which go far beyond the ordinary customizing options.” Two things are breaking new ground here: Firstly, the watch presents a new way to read time, requiring the development of a proprietary movement; secondly, the case is made of a carbon and red ceramic composite formulated explici..

Omega Releases First New Calibre 321 Speedmaster Model In Steel, Referencing The Legendary ‘Ed White’

Among the Omega faithful, few Speedmaster models carry the caché of the legendary “Ed White.” The original model, predating the signature Omega twisted-lug design, became immortal on the wrist of the astronaut of the same name during America’s first spacewalk in 1965. As its first release of 2020, the brand has reintroduced the “Ed White” as part of its regular lineup with the new Speedmaster Moonwatch Chronograph 39.7 MM reference 311.30.40.30.01.001, powered by the same Calibre 321 movement as its 1965 predecessor.

While the Calibre 321 was reintroduced to production after decades of hiatus in January 2019, this new model is the first steel Speedmaster to be powered by the movement in over 50 years. The new Calibre 321 “Ed White” is an incredibly faithful reproduction of the classic model, updated with modern Omega quality. The case is substantially smaller than the traditional Speedmaster Professional, measuring in at 39.7mm, thanks to the simpler straight-lug design. Other hallma..

The Moonwatch, however, easily extended to other items. Our special interest goes to flown objects, watches at best, but objects like pens and cameras appeal to us as well.
