This week, we’ll have a look at a Panerai of nearly legal drinking age in the Submersible. But first…
I’m on a roll. Perhaps my roll is down the hill of despair, but I’ve now featured two losers in a row. Last week’s Patek Philippe 5524G Calatrava suffered a tight but ultimately decisive 52% Crying Shame loss. While I quietly applaud the Patek entrée into more adventurous realms, most of you do not and, therefore, it appears that a Brioni suit still trumps a Givenchy tee (as if…). Moving on, let’s see if today’s Panerai Submersible w..

Panerai Celebrates 70 Years Of The Luminor With Exciting New Models

What started 70 years ago as an extraordinary watch for elite forces of the Italian navy during WWII has become one of the most recognizable and popular sports watches. The Panerai Luminor paved the way for oversized watches and has earned its position as an icon. However, Panerai never allowed the Luminor rest on its laurels, but instead used it as their preferred platform to push the envelope, either with complicated movements or with innovative materials. The latter is also what they used for the three special models of the Luminor that Panerai created to celebrate its 70th anniversary. READ MORE

This Week in Watches – The Panerai Edition

HomeWatch ReleasesThis Week in Watches – The Panerai Edition Watch ReleasesPaneraiThis Week in Watches – The Panerai Edition All the Releases for 2020 by Michael Stockton April 25, 2020 MIN READThis Week in Watches – The Panerai EditionWelcome to a special episode of This Week in Watches. I say “special” because it’s a one-brand show today as we bring you the Panerai Edition where I’ll run down each and every new model for 2020.
What you’ll notice in this Panerai edition is a real focus on case materials. It’s almost as if Panerai has transitioned into a Formula 1 chassis builder with its suite of cool composites. And for those who have scoffed at reduced water resistance in the recent past, rest assured that 300 meters it the theme here. Let’s get to it.

PAM01118 — Luminor Marina Carbotech 44The Luminor Marina Carbotech 44 closely follows yesterday’s PAM01117 Luminor Marina. This watch also celebrates the 70th anniversary of Luminor, a tritium-based luminescence material. It abounds ..

While we’re used to hearing about brands or specific models/model families celebrating significant (or often seemingly arbitrary) dates in their history, it is less common to celebrate the anniversary of a component, or, in this case, a substance that went on to change a brand’s history. But here we are. Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Luminor, the tritium-based glow-in-dark goo that turns 70 this year.
And how did Luminor’s inventors Panerai choose to celebrate? By jumping the lume shark on a pair of rocket-powered water-skis, of course. While the Luminor name is now better known as the family that first brought the luminous ..

Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM 1661 Hands-On

It feels like the paint is still drying on Panerai‘s brand new Hudson Yards boutique in New York City, but the retail space has wasted little time ensuring it is fully stocked with all the latest 2020 novelties – including the Luminor Marina Carbotech ref. PAM 1661, which was just announced a little over a month ago.

This particular release is reportedly just the proverbial tip of the iceberg, in what’s expected to be a big year for the brand’s best-selling Luminor collection. And if you haven’t been following along, Panerai has – since the appointing of new CEO Jean Marc Pontroue, been streamlining its offerings into three distinct collections: Submersible, which is a proper dive watch with a proper rotating bezel, the Radiomir, which has a smooth bezel and no crown guard (available in both wire and more angular 1940-style lugs), and the emblematic Luminor, which also has a smooth bezel, but is fitted with Panerai’s distinctive crown guard locking system. 2019 saw..

Last week, I showed you the Rolex Precision 6694. To jog your memory, this is a sweet 34mm Oyster with a manual wind movement. At just over €3,500, it walked away with a respectable 68% Wrist Game win. I’d call that a solid week’s work despite the normal whinging about featuring a Rolex. Well, this week we are back with yet another finger flexer in the Panerai Luminor Base Logo. Let’s see if adding 10mm of diameter is a good thing for you or no..

Watch of the Week: Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Nery Edition

Within the collection of Panerai does the Submersible hold a special place. They are often even bolder than their siblings, which is especially the case with the Submersible Chrono Guillaume Nery Edition. With a diameter of 47mm, it is large, even for a Panerai. The case is crafted from titanium to keep the weight down and has a black DLC coating. DLC stands for 'Diamond-Like Carbon,' which is a robust coating that Panerai applied with a matte finish. A group of watch lovers so passionate, they spawned their own, official model. As a publication with some experience of the same, we have to say this: Respect where respect is due. Panerai, after all these years, continues to keep an old design fresh. With the new PAM01661, Luminor Marina gets a taste of Carbotech.
The Panerai Luminor Marina is a classic. No doubt about it. The Luminor range was created in 1950, but didn’t go on sale to the public until 1993. When it did, the Luminor Marina joined the collection and has been a fan favorite ever since. The fact that for so much of the brand’s history its..

Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM 1661 First Look

Rumor had it that 2020 was going to be the year of the Luminor for Panerai, and this new Luminor Marina Carbotech ref. PAM1661 could be an early indicator confirming that notion. Most of what we saw from Panerai in 2019 seemed to center around the re-shuffling of the brand’s portfolio, particularly with a focus on tidying up existing lines while introducing new Due dress and Submersible tool/sport models. It seems only natural that Panerai turn to its signature breadwinner for the same treatment — and leading things off is a super-technical twist on an otherwise classic.

You wouldn’t be mistaken for wondering if there weren’t already a Luminor Marina rendered in ultralight Carbotech — in fact, there is: It’s PAM661, which is also a black 44mm Luminor case fitted with the same P.9010 movement. But what makes this old reference interesting isn’t its “dirty dial” (a nickname given to Panerai dials that use beige Super-LumiNova), but its somewhat rare dial configuration, which mixes appl..
