Haute Complication: A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual

This year it has been fourteen years ago since A. Lange & Söhne launched their Datograph Perpetual, yet it is still holding a prominent position as one of the most desirable pieces within the collection of the brand. As with many of the watches from this A. Lange & Söhne, is also this timepiece an elegant and classic creation. Day, month, and leap year are indicated in a traditional way, with hands on subdials, as is the day/night indicator. In between them, we find a window for the moon phase display. The outsize date is perhaps the most eyecatching feature of this watch, placed just below the twelve o’clock position, in two rectangular gold-rimmed windows. With this complication does the Datograph Perpetual also honor that typical A. Lange & Söhne tradition of displaying the date in such an oversized fashion.

Parmigiani Hijri Perpetual Calendar Watch Tracks Islamic Lunar Calendar

Just released is this Parmigiani Hijri Perpetual Calendar watch, the first wristwatch to track the Islamic lunar calendar. I say “wristwatch” because there have been at least some pocket watches featuring the complication that were restored by Michel Parmigiani himself, though I imagine there aren’t many, as one of them was a Gregorian calendar that was done in Arabic and given to a king. This restoration work inspired Parmigiani to create a Hijri calendar table clock back in 2011. It’s hard to think of another example of a watch with a new complication being introduced that doesn’t market itself to or make concessions for the Western or Chinese market at all.

I spoke with Davide Traxler, CEO of Parmigiani, about the Hijri Perpetual Calendar watch and wasn’t surprised to learn that the Middle East isn’t really a strong market at all for the brand (at least for men’s watches — their women’s watches are considerably more popular in the region). IWC Schaffhausen Launches The “Lewis Hamilton” Large Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Version

IWC Schaffhausen launched the “Lewis Hamilton” Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition, honoring the British legendary six-time Formula One champion.

Hamilton collaborated with IWC Schaffhausen’s designers in creating the timepiece. The special design, of which there are only to 100 watches available, combines a black ceramic case and a Bordeaux-red dial with a crown and a case-back ring made of 18-carat 5N gold. The watch has a diameter of 46.5 millimeters. The textile strap is also colored in Bordeaux-red.

“This partnership with IWC was incredibly exciting for me, and it’s been an honor to collaborate so closely with the watchmakers in Schaffhausen,” said Hamilton. “Together, we’ve designed a beautiful timepiece which combines two things I am really passionate about – craftsmanship and design – and I am so pleased with the result.”
