Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) Canceled Due To The COVID-19 Coronavirus This will be a rocky year by FratelloFebruary 27, 2020 MIN READWatches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) Canceled Due To The COVID-19 Coronavirus

We all saw it coming. After Swatch Group decided to cancel Time to Move and Grand Seiko canceled its summit in Japan, the writing was on the wall for the Watches & Wonders event in Geneva. Today the announcement dropped. W&W is the next major fair to fall to the Coronavirus.

Now that the COVID-19 coronavirus is spreading quickly in Europe as well, we expect that traveling will become very difficult in the coming weeks and months. For shows like Watches & Wonders, people from all over the world will come together in one place, which makes it risky. We fully understand that the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (organizer of Watches & Wonders Geneva), to anticipate the potential risks that travels and important international gatherings could entail.

Watches & Wonders should have taken place from April 25 to April 29th in Geneva but is now canceled. Brands will find their way to show their new watches to the press and retailers later on, and most probably in the local markets.

It will surely be a big challenge this year for many brands, especially those who are depending on certain regions that have been hit badly by the COVID-19 coronavirus. Time to Move brands (Omega, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Breguet, Jaquet Droz, and Harry Winston) are seeking for solutions on how to get their news across in a proper way, and the same goes for Grand Seiko. We suspect that all brands that would be exhibiting at Watches & Wonders to provide the press releases first and then organize local events for press and retailers later on.

The show that is planned to be right after Watches & Wonders is Baselworld 2020. Although the Baselworld organization is still sending out ‘everything goes ahead as planned’ press releases on a weekly basis, we foresee that this will be canceled as well. The risk is too high, and not worth it, in our opinion. That said, we do pity the cancellations of all these exhibitions as it normally is the way for us to get the news, photos, video and talk to all these brands.

We will keep you posted, and bring you the news on the new watches for 2020 as soon as we have it.
